Imagine 1.3 billion fans being crazy about a game of football (to someone else more familiar as soccer) in China. That is an enormous fans base, not only just for the sport or the football club itself, but also a mega audience and potential consumer base for many consumer brands who would like to get connected with their consumers through football in China.
With the fast rise of the middle-class consumer population, increased discretionary household incomes, and more availability of leisure time as an important part of the China consumer pattern, China has the ability to become an impressive football nation through education, promotion and endorsement.
Last Thursday, on my way from Hong Kong to a meeting in downtown Shenzhen, I came across these advertisement posters in the Shenzhen metro halls, promoting two Italian top football clubs - AC Milan versus Inter Milan - to play a game of football in Shenzhen.
Also in China, Football is Big Business!
